Questioning
Questioning is a reading strategy that can significantly build reading comprehension. Asking and answering questions is a way that a reader can deeply interact with reading, which helps them remember what they are reading. Good readers are continually asking and answering questions when they read.
It is important for us to encourage students to ask questions before, during, and after reading to help them engage with the text, as well as build comprehension.

Readers as "Detectives"
I like to explain to my students that good readers are like "detectives", trying to "solve" the great mystery that they are reading. Questioning is a tool they use as "detectives" to figure out what they are reading.
As detectives, readers must ASK and ANSWER lots of questions to help "crack the case," which builds stronger comprehension. As "detectives", the reader can also use the questions they make to PREDICT what is going to happen next in the text. This helps us find and remember the most important information.

"Making Predictions is an effective strategy students can use to build comprehension"
Also known as "inferring", making predictions, hypothesizing, interpreting, and drawing conclusions is a higher level process of thinking that is exhibited by strong readers.
Helping students develop these skills is a great way to strengthen reading comprehension. Making predictions is a great way for students to analyze what they are reading, and interact with the text.

This is a worksheet I created to help students use the "Questioning" strategy while reading. This worksheet was devised for students to use continually throughout the reading process, and is a place where students, as reading "detectives," can document the questions they ask, and answer them. This also helps them make predictions, and keep track of the most important information.
